Isaac Claxton and Nathaniel Claxton Documentation         Updated March 13, 2010

This file is the documentation for the Isaac Claxton Descendancy Chart found on my website.

For a discussion on the possibility of two Isaac Claxtons go to this link: Two Isaac Discussion

DNA on a Nathaniel Claxton descendant matches the general Claxton DNA.  Thus Nathaniel is definitely of the Claxton blood line.   I suspect that Milton D. Claxton is Nathaniel’s father.  A fellow researcher came up with an 1867 Chancery Court record (see 1867 below) on Isaac Claxton's estate that named his children very explicitly.  This limits the possibilities for lineage.

We have a preponderance of information that will be documented at a later time that leads us to believe Milton Dudley Claxton is the father of Nathaniel Claxton.  So much so I will be revising the web page to show these facts.

If Nathaniel was raised by the Hyles family and he maintained his Claxton name, then he is probably not a Hyles.  The adopted son comment on the census record was to indicate Hyles was raising someone else's child.  The 1900 Census indicated that Saphire has never had any children.  That indicates that Nathaniel must be truly a Claxton.

Susan E. Claxton Gilmer is in the 1870 Giles Census.  She is married to Simeon Gilmore.  The census states they have a child named Nathaniel Gilmer age 7 the proper age for Nathaniel Claxton.  So did he get enumerated in two households in the census?

Milton D. Claxton is mentioned in the 1867 Chancery Court records.  I cannot find Milton in the 1860 Census.  Could Nathan (born 1863) be Milton’s child raised by his aunt Saphire?  That would explain why Saphire is referred to as his Aunt in the 1900 US Census.

Nathan calls Saphire(Sophia) his Aunt in the 1900 Census, I wonder if this is because she was his "adopted mother" or was it that she was a Claxton sister that raised him?
I cannot find a marriage on William Hyles and wife Sophia.
There were no Claxton neighbors in the 1850 Census, 1860 Census, or 1870 Census.
In the 1900 Census Saphire(Sophia) Hiles is in Nathaniel's household listed as an Aunt.  This Hyles/Hiles family never has any children of their own listed.
If the Hiles family I found in the 1870 Census is the correct family, then Nathaniel should

have been adopted between 1863 and 1870.

Owenby Self died in 1856 leaving widow Jane and dau. Emaline, Hepsibah, and Mary Ann

Note: Owenby Self's daughter Rebecca is not mentioned in the 1866 suit.

Rebecca E. and Mary A. are in Ownby's household in the 1850 Census

Isaac Claxton married Jane Self on April 12, 1857

William L. Claxton son of Isaac married Mary Ann Self dau of Owenby and Jane Self prior to 1858

William L. Claxton son of Isaac was killed on May 12, 1863

Mary Ann Self Claxton marries 2nd to Thomas Shadden between 1863 and 1866

According to an 1866 estate suit in Chancery Court of the estate of Owenby Self:

Isaac Claxton had intermarried with Self's widow Jane and three children

Emaline Self

Hepsibah Self who married a Davis

Mary Ann Self who married 1st Willliam L. Claxton and 2nd Thomas Shadden

Isaac Claxton dies in July of 1867

Rebecca Self marries David Snow prior to 1869

Jane Clanton (Claxton), Isaac Claxton's 2nd wife Jane Self is in the David Snow household in the 1870 Census

Thomas Shadden with wife Mary Ann move to Fannin Co., TX in 1877 with their children and Mary Ann's 2 sons William J, and John L Claxton.  Family is in TX in the 1880 Census

We have found the brothers William James Claxton and John Lane Claxton in Fannin County, TX.  John moves on to Wyoming.  We have also found a researching descendant from each of those lines living in the North Dallas suburbs.   We have at least one Claxton male on one of these lines that is going to do a DNA test for comparison.

The Confederate Cemetery

The Confederate Cemetery has 140 graves of soldiers mortally wounded in the Battle of Raymond, May 12, 1863. The Civil War soldiers, mostly from Tennessee and Texas, died in private residences around the town that served as hospitals. A few probably died of sickness while stationed in the area or died of wounds from various local skirmishes or nearby battles such as Champion's Hill. Those that were killed outright on the battlefield of Raymond were reported to have been buried where they fell by Union soldiers.
